A Message for the New Year

These are a few of the stories about our friends that are helped by your support. Without you, none of this would be possible. The life of a rescuer is difficult at times. Hearing about the suffering of God's creatures is heart wrenching. It is often difficult to stay positive. I mentioned in a letter to one of our supporters about the short straw. I might have told this story before and if so, here it is again. When I'm blue or struggling to shake off the burn-out, I think the animals sense this. In my mind I see them having a conference in the evenings, and all sitting around with straws in the middle of the floor. One-by-one they draw their straw. The one with the short straw has to do something endearing the next day to cheer me up. As I go around doing the daily chores, there it is. One of the cats jumps up on a table and puts it's legs up around my neck and nestles my cheek or a dog rolls over with legs stretched upward. A sideways glance at me saying Aren't I cute? I remember why I do this. I laugh and say: I see you got the short straw. Please help us continue with our mission. We need your support - not only now but throughout the year.Happy Holidays to all,Barbara

It's No Secret, Victoria is Lucky

Victoria came from a Victorian rental house two doors away from the sanctuary. Word got to us from a neighbor that the tenant had moved out 3 weeks prior. There was no heat, food or water but they left behind a cat. Even before they moved, the treatment of their cat was less than acceptable. They had fleas in their apartment and Piglet (now Victoria) had allergies. She had open wounds and loss of hair.Fortunately we were able to get her. First thing was to get rid of the fleas. Her tail was nothing but a thin extension. No fur. She is now fully filled out and beautiful. Her disposition is slightly unpredictable - trusting yet still uncertain.

Wriggley the Dog!

A call from the Appalachian Trail Conservatory in Harpers Ferry ended several hours later with a new resident at CFP. When employees came to work on a Monday, they spotted a frightened, somewhat snippy pup hiding out behind the air conditioning units. Who knows how long he had been there. My day off was spent trying not to frighten him further but rescue him before animal control was called. After the initial meeting I knew it would take more than kind words to get him to trust me. I came back to the shelter and picked up Fergie, our always friendly Beagle, and took her with me. When he saw her, he ran out to her but as soon as he spotted me, back behind the air conditioners he ran. Cowering and showing his teeth.

All About Dustin

One of Beloved's visits to our vet's office was on a rainy, cold, windy day. Coming back to the sanctuary and finding something that wasn't there when you left always takes your breath away. There by the back door was a carrier. Sitting in the wind and rain. Inside was this bewildered and frightened creature. In this case not even a note. He was scared and crying. It was heart breaking. Couldn't they at least have left him on the covered porch?

He's a Keeper

Let's not ignore a permanent resident. This little boy was part of a litter a feral mom had at a house that was under renovation in Harpers Ferry. She had the litter outside on top of a clothes dryer. Friends that lived across the street started feeding the mom and contacted us for help. Before the kittens were old enough to wander off, we put them in a large carrier and enticed the mother to follow. Time passed. They were weaned. Spayed/Neutered and now ready for adoption. A wonderful woman came to the sanctuary in search of two kittens. She chose the pictured kitten and his brother. Within a few weeks she called us.
